This article will confirm when an Adult First service can be ordered for your candidate.
REQUIREMENTS:
Access to the Verifile client portal
A candidate order on the Verifile client portal with a UK Criminal Record (Enhanced, England & Wales) check.
A DBS Adult First service is a product available to organisations who can request a check of the DBS adults’ barred list.
Dependent on the result, a person could be permitted to start work, under supervision, with vulnerable adults before a DBS certificate has been obtained.
DBS Adult First is a service provided by the Disclosure and Barring Service that can be used in cases where, exceptionally, and in accordance with the terms of Department of Health guidance, a person is permitted to start work with adults before a DBS Certificate has been obtained.
- Can be applied to a UK Criminal Record (Enhanced, England & Wales) check.
- This service is only available to organisations eligible to access the DBS Adult Barred List search and have requested a check of the barred lists on their DBS application form.
- The DBS check must be in the status 'Application accepted by DBS' for the Adult First service to be eligible to order.
- The DBS Adult First service is not appropriate where a person intends to work with both children and adults. There is no equivalent quick check of the children's barred list.
- The DBS Adult First service should be used only in exceptional circumstances and when absolutely necessary. It is an exceptions service, used only where an individual is permitted to start work with adults before a DBS Certificate has been obtained in accordance with the terms of Department of Health guidance e.g. adult services such as care homes, domiciliary care agencies and adult placement schemes where DBS Certificates are required by law.
- DBS Adult First is not a substitute for a DBS Certificate and providers must take care when making recruitment decisions prior to receiving a full DBS Certificate.
There is no equivalent quick check of the children's barred list.
To order an Adult First service through Verifile, your UK Criminal Record (Enhanced, England & Wales) check needs to be in the Check Status: Application submitted to DBS.

In addition to this, the DBS Job Role selected for your candidate must include a check of the Adult Barred list.
You can check this by clicking into the UK Criminal Record (Enhanced, England & Wales).
You'll then need to scroll down to the Section called Check Definition and ensure the question Does this job require working with vulnerable adults? is answered Yes.
Once you've met the above requirements, you'll be able to reach out to the Client Service Team via Live Chat or by calling +44 (0) 1234 339 350 between 08:30-17:30 Monday to Friday (UK time) or via email [email protected] to request an Adult First check to be added to your order(s).
Please kindly note, there is a nominal fee for an Adult First service to be completed per candidate.
Verifile will then order the Adult First service for you and the results will be emailed to the email address of the client user who placed this candidate's order on the Verifile system.
