What is a DBS Check?

This check was designed for individuals living or working in England and Wales, but is also used in Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.


A DBS check is a UK Criminal Record Check that is completed through the Disclosure and Barring Service and can be completed on applicants/individuals who live and/or work in England or Wales.


The DBS offers three types of UK Criminal Searches:

  • Basic
  • Standard
  • Enhanced

In Scotland, these are:

  • Level 1
  • Level 2
  • Level 2 with Barred List
