This article is to guide the clients in assisting candidates with errors scanning their driving licence through the digital process.

In order to confirm a candidate's ID for their UK criminal record check, we offer a 'UK Digital Identity' check which should be placed alongside the UK criminal record check to confirm the candidate's ID via the digital process.

We use 'Yoti' or 'Post Office' to confirm the candidate and their ID documents to the same high security standards as our core verification process.

The Digital Process for scanning ID:

  • The candidate receives log in details for their Verifile background screening form
  • The candidate will either need to create a 'Yoti' or 'Post Office' profile and scan ID or they can select the 'Continue without app' option to scan ID or the background screening form once logged in will ask does the candidate have a passport 'yes' or 'no', the candidate will then scan ID.
  • If the candidate has used the 'Yoti' or 'Post Office' application to scan ID, they will need to transfer it to their background screening form and proceed in completing the information, to then submit the background screening form.
  • If the digital route was successful and was able to confirm the candidates ID, it will transfer the information across (name, address, date of birth). If it was unsuccessful for whatever reason, when the candidate submits the background screening form it will tell our system and automatically cancel the check, flagging it 'Red' to bring to your attention that it has not been completed.

When information is incorrect:

Please be aware that if the candidate scans their ID (driving licence), it must show their full legal name (including middle names). If the candidate has not legally changed their name by deed poll or used a deed poll to remove any of their names (for instance, their middle name). Then this is still their full legal current name from birth, as declared on birth certificate.

If  an error appears regarding the middle name or name not matching the driving licence, then please check the driving licence number as it could be a typing mistake.

For a UK  driving licence the number is a 16-character code that is unique to the individual. Section 5 in the image below.

DVLA Registering Driving Licences or the Candidate has applied for a Driving Licence but left out names:

If the candidate has multiple names, such as two first names but no middle name, then DVLA can sometimes register one of the candidates first name as their middle name. It would be hard to know that this is done, however our form is linked with the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) and so the form will detect if the name does not match.

If the candidate has applied for an ID document (Driving Licence or Passport) but the middle name was not included or if the candidate has changed their name and their driving licence has not been updated.

This, too, will bring up errors, as for a UK Criminal Record check the full legal current name must be declared. Therefore, the candidate will be unable to use their driving licence as ID for the digital route, as this can cause the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) to withdraw applications.

Once a candidate scans their ID via the digital route and it has been transferred over to their background screening form. The information cannot be removed, as this is a automatic digital process. If the checks are still required, this means that a new order will need to be placed for the candidate.

If the candidate has made a profile on a 'Yoti' or 'Post Office' application and has used this method for the digital route, if a new order is placed and the candidate is required to scan a different document that reflects their full legal current name.

Then the candidate will need to reset their profile for 'Yoti' or 'Post Office' and make a new account, where they scan the correct document. Otherwise the candidate risks sending over the previous document information and the same error will occur.

What Driving Licence's can be used:

When a UK Digital Identity check is placed alongside a UK Criminal Record check, in order to confirm ID via the digital route, then the candidate can scan a driving license (any country).  However, it must include:

  • Full legal name (All names on birth certificate or on deed poll, this includes all middle names)
  • Current address

Driving licence's cannot be used a right to work document and therefore cannot be used for the digital route for the UK Right To Work check.
